What we offer

Your road back to safety-sensitive work starts here.

A DOT drug or alcohol violation can affect your ability to perform safety-sensitive duties — but it does not have to be the end of your professional journey. Shyne Professional Services, LLC provides DOT-qualified Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) evaluations to help employees navigate the federally required Return-to-Duty process.

Compliance assurance

Our process strictly follows U.S. Department of Transportation guidelines under 49 CFR Part 40.

The DOT Return-to-Duty process, step by step

From violation to clearance — here is what to expect and what is expected of you.

Step 1

Initial SAP Evaluation

The SAP will complete the comprehensive evaluation. The evaluation can take place in-person or virtually.

Step 2

Education and/or Treatment Recommendation

Based on the initial evaluation, the SAP will make recommendations for treatment and/or educational courses.

Step 3

Follow-Up SAP Evaluation

Once you have successfully completed the recommended education and/or treatment, you will return to the SAP for a follow-up evaluation.

Step 4

Return to Duty Drug Testing

After SAP clearance, employer orders directly observed drug testing. The drug testing schedule is confidential and strictly between the SAP and the Designated Employer Representative (DER).

Non-DOT SAP Evaluations

Not every workplace substance use concern falls under federal DOT regulations. We provide Non-DOT SAP evaluations for individuals, employers, and other referring parties when an assessment is needed outside the federally regulated Return-to-Duty process. A Non-DOT evaluation may help identify substance-related concerns and determine appropriate recommendations for education, counseling, treatment, or other services. Because requirements vary by employer, organization, or referral source, services are individualized according to the purpose of the referral.

SAP Substance Abuse Education

When substance abuse education is recommended as part of a SAP evaluation or referral requirement, Shyne Professional Services provides structured educational services designed to increase knowledge and encourage responsible decision-making.

Common questions about the SAP process

How quickly can I schedule an evaluation?
Appointment availability varies. Shyne Professional Services, LLC works to offer timely scheduling for individuals who need to begin the DOT Return-to-Duty process. Contact us to request an appointment and learn about current availability.
Yes. SAP evaluations may be conducted virtually when permitted by applicable professional requirements. Federal DOT regulations allow qualifying remote SAP evaluations when conducted through real-time audio and video technology that allows the SAP and employee to see and hear one another and provides appropriate confidentiality and security. Virtual and in-person appointments may be available depending on your circumstances and applicable requirements.
There is no standard amount of time for completing the SAP process. The length of the process depends on the individualized education and/or treatment recommendations made following the initial evaluation, how quickly those recommendations are completed, and when the employee is able to demonstrate successful compliance. The SAP process is individualized and cannot be shortened or bypassed simply to meet an employment deadline.
No. Successfully completing the SAP process may make you eligible to proceed to Return-to-Duty testing, but it does not guarantee employment, rehire, or reinstatement to a safety-sensitive position. Employment decisions are made by the employer in accordance with applicable policies, agreements, and legal requirements.
The SAP determines whether you have successfully complied with the SAP recommendations and whether you are eligible to proceed to Return-to-Duty testing. The SAP does not make the employer’s employment or fitness-for-duty decision. The employer determines whether an employee will return to a safety-sensitive position after applicable DOT requirements have been satisfied
Yes. Shyne Professional Services, LLC also offers Non-DOT substance use evaluations for individuals and employees whose circumstances fall outside the federally regulated DOT Return-to-Duty process. Non-DOT services are separate from the federal DOT SAP process.
